Critical History
The Mater Dolorosa and the two angels are mentioned in the book of Volk.1 Steiner only mentions the mMater Dolorosa 2 Lipperts list was published 5 years before the execution of the sculpture. The sculpture is standing on the mensa of a sidealtar just opposite of the entry of the church, two carved vases with flowers are positioned left and right. The 2 angels are standing on consoles left and right of the tabernacle of the highaltar.
Construction / Execution
The sculptures are made by wood and have a polychrome surface. The sculpture of Maria is hollowed and covered again with a carved lidpiece. On this part of the sculpture on the blue colour of her coat is written an inscription with a brush: "Ex munere decan Melzer ao: 1777 Straub. fecit Monachy" A nimbus which is standing separated is covering the complete sculpture from behind. On the backside of both angels an inscription is written with a brush upon a painting layer: "Ex munere Philippi de Hepp. 1777"

Comment
The 2 angels are actually standing on both sides of the tabernacle of the highaltar. Compared with other angels that J. B. Straub has created for tabernacles they seem to show a expression that does not fit to this function. On the other hand the form of the consoles does not fit to the architecture of the highaltar which dates in the first half of the 17th century. May be the 2 angels should stand together with the Mater Dolorosa. In the photoarchive we have historic photos but they show always the actual situation. If the situation was changed then it must have been in 19th century. The carved vases with the flowers should be created earlier then then the 3 sculptures.
Conservation-restoration
- 1861
Treatment Description
Following the inscription on the backside: "1861 Ren." the sculpture was completely overpainted in that time. The actual surface must have been executed in the middle of the 20th century the result its a mixture of painting layers from different times.
