Critical History
The miniature sculpture with St Dominic and St Clare was attributed to Joseph Straub by Sergej Vrišer.1 The sculpture of the Virgin Mary at the top is older and seems to represent a copy of an iconographic type of the Virgin Mary that was worshipped at that time. The original location of the sculpture is unknown, but it is believed it came from the chapel in Podlehnik.
The sculptures of St Dominic and St Clare are of exceptional quality and carved with special attention to details. In the composition of the kneeling saints we can see parallels with the Rosary altar in Birkfeld and with the high altar in Trški vrh (both documented works of Philipp Jakob Straub).
Construction / Execution
The sculptures are made of wood. They are naturalistically painted. Their coats are silvered and rimmed with a golden line. The sculptures are placed on a gilded base, which is carved in the shape of two volutes with a higher pedestal in the middle. It has a fine Rococo-style decoration.
