Critical History

The high altar in the Franciscan church in Hrvatska Kostajnica was erected between 1760 and 1764, probably as a donation of a member of the count family Voikffy, whose coat of arms was above the altar painting. According to the inscription on the backside, the altar painting was ordered by lieutenant Andrija Andrijević in 1759 (Ins. 1).1 Doris Baričević attributed the high altar and the tabernacle to Franz Anton Straub. Evenmore, she considered the tabernacle and its adorning angels to be one of his masterpieces.2 In 1764 the altar was polychromed by Franciscan brothers Lazar Zweck and Luka Auleidner.3 According to Paškal Cvekan, the altar was repainted in 1836 by Josip Jakober who received 256 florins for his work. Altar was renovated once more in 1912 by Antun Richard from Koprivnica, with the help of the gilder Josip Kraljić and Andrija Sabo from Slovenia.4

The high altar was completely destroyed in the Homeland War in 1991.
