Critical History
The façade of Mariahilferstraße 1 was created about 1768/1769 by Joseph Hueber.1 Around 1770 the sculpture of Mary Immaculate by Philipp Jakob Straub came into existence, which thus is attributable to the artist’s late period. It is situated at the south-eastern corner of the building, standing on a rocaille-console. Horst Schweigert pointed out, that the sculpture is of the high technical quality and artistic meaningfulness typical for the artist’s other sandstone statues of that period – in contrast to the carvings, which already show classical tendencies.2
