Critical History

The stone sculpture of St Nicholas in Lovrenc na Pohorju was attributed to Joseph Straub by Sergej Vrišer.1 He dated the sculpture in 1754, according to the inscription on the right side of its stone base (Ins. 2).

The sculpture has its own roof and an iron fence. It used to stand in the centre of the market place, but it was moved to the side in 1928, due to the increased traffic.

Construction / Execution

The sculpture is made of sandstone and placed on the stone base. It has a well finished backside with detailed lines of drapery. The tear shaped lines on drapery are typical for Joseph Straub.

Comment

The sculpture is only slightly damaged by weather influence because it has a roof above to protect it. There are even some remains of coloration. The apples, the hat, the stick and the edge of the book are covered with metal leaves of green appearance due to oxidization.
