Critical History

The bozzetto shows the sculpture of S. John of Nepomuk who died in the river Moldau. He is embraced by the arms of the river Moldau personified by a man with beard. Beetween the legs of the 2 figures water is running out of a vessel. The sculpture might be created for one of the 4 fountains that J. B. Straub had executed for the town of Munich in 1751. 1 The sculptures for the 4 fountains were carved in wood (oak) and gilded. They were 7 feet high that is a bit more than lifesize.2 The costs for one of them was 150 fl. The sculpture origins from the collection of the privy councillor Sigmund Rohrer. It has the Inv. no. 6269. There is a drawing which shows what was ordered by the contracting authorities. State Owned Graphic Collection Munich Inv. no. 32210.
