Critical History

Right side altar of St Benedict with the statues of St Magnus and St Leonard. The tabernacle has the relief "Abraham sacrifices Issac" and at the side figures of the allegories of Hope and Faith. The altar is crowned with an angel with a bishop attributes.

The altarpiece "St Benedict in the circle of Benedictines" is by Ch. Thomas and F. A. Scheffler, 1754-56

The work is testified by Lippert and the bills have been preserved (Munich, archives of the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising, Pfarrsachen Ettal).1

On 2 March 1757 in Munich, the first contract for the sculptures of the Benedictusaltar (southern side altar) was signed with J. B. Straub, according to the "proiectiert und ybergebenen Modell und Riß" and 600 fl. agreed as payment considering the "schon gemachten Reißuncösten, verfaßten Rissen und Modellen“. The final payment was on 12 June 1758, with an additional 50 fl "Recompens". The carpentry work for the tabernacle was made by the Munich Kistler Franz Ignatz Settele for 60 fl.
