Critical History

The pulpit is located between the northern side altars. On the body is a relief of the Adoration of the Shepherds and attributes of the four Evangelists, on the canopy the Dove of the Holy Spirit, and on the top St Michael Group, 1759/60 by Johann B. Straub.

The work is testified by Lippert and the bills have been preserved (Munich, archives of the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising, Pfarrsachen Ettal).1

On 23 July 1759, a second contract was signed in Ettal for the Korbiniansaltar (northern side altar) and the pulpit "nach dem proiectierten und zu übergeben seyenten Modell und dernahlen gemachten Verzaichnus Riss". Straub was to do the sculptures "zierlichist und in solcher Macht und Vollkommenheit, wie den ersten verförthigen, her- und aufstellen, wie auch die versprochene Modell, sowohl vor sich selbst als auch unser Kistler zur rechten Zeit herrichten und einschicken". The work was to be completed not later than the autumn of the following year. For this work Straub received 850 fl. The last payment was made in November 1760.

Construction / Execution

The pulpit is constructed of wood and marbled. The sculptures and the relief are carved in wood and are completely gilded.
