Critical History

Lippert lists under the numbers 33-38 several busts and reliefs for the equipment of St Michael. 1 Volk says that the 2 sculptures belong to the best which J. B. Straub executed in his later years (1770).2 The architecture dates in 1697 for the design Frater Johannes Hörmann SJ. was responsible. 3
The sculpture of St Joachim is standing on the right side of the painting "annunciation to St Maria" by Peter Candid (1574) the sculpture of St Anna on the left. Joachim holds in his right hand the bar of a shepherds shovel. His left hand is opened in a gesture of admiration/wondering. His head is turned upwards. Anna is keeping a book in her left hand and holds her right hand like explaining something to someone. She is looking downwards. Both sculptures are presented with oriental cloth. Their heads are covered with a shawl.
The architecture of the altar is older than the sculptures.

Construction / Execution

The sculptures were made in wood. They bear a white monochrome painting layer with gilded details. The altar was made in stone or stucco-marble.
