Critical History

The epitaph was created for the priest Johann Jakob Schorer who died in 1760. He was priest for 53 years and bequestet the parish with 20047 Gulden. The authorship of J. B. Straub for his epitaph is documented by the priest Lorenz Gruber (1825–1839) who left documents in the archive of Landsberg.1 The epitaph consists of a console and the stone with the inscription. The decoration seems to be quite simple. On top of the epitaph sits a little child/angel with wings like a butterfly. As a attribute of the deceaseds profession he wears a priests cap. A chalice, a sandglass also with butterflywings and a oillamp are strung in a row.

Comment

Compared with other epitaphs of J. B. Straub there is obviously less decoration. May be this is due to the modest character of the deceased. One of his last wishes was to create a foundation which supports the poor people.
